A Gender Gap to Innovation (Report)

September 14th, 2011 by Noah Clark

The United States Economic & Statistics Administration recently came out with a report on the gender gap in STEM. It’s a pretty short report, and a easy read, but filled with lots of important information.

This report has some really interesting new facts about the gender gap in STEM. It addresses the issue, and compares men and women in STEM, but doesn’t provide a solution. The report hints at a few key reasons why they believe that there is this gender gap, but it doesn’t provide a solution:

There are many possible factors contributing to the discrepancy of women and men in STEM
jobs, including: a lack of female role models, gender stereotyping, and less family-friendly
flexibility in the STEM fields. Regardless of the causes, the findings of this report provide evidence of a need to encourage and support women in STEM.

The thing that I found really interesting, and something I didn’t know about until reading this report is about what women do with their STEM degrees:

The relatively few women who receive STEM degrees are concentrated in physical and life sciences, in contrast to men, who are concentrated primarily in engineering.  Women who do receive STEM degrees are less likely to work in STEM jobs than their male counterparts
